The landscape around Dovestone Reservoir in National park Oldham, UK, has suffered from vegetation loss due to human activity.
+
Volunteers with the RSPB (The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) started a planting program more than 10 years ago. Their goal is to restore the landscape around the reservoir using natural sphagnum moss.
+
For the past decade, they have been planting in the region, significantly improving water quality in Oldham. Volunteers have planted more than one million sphagnum moss at the site.
+
According to Kate Hanley, the site manager, the moss they use provides biodiversity benefits. It also helps prevent floods, as it can hold more than 20 times its weight in water. This makes the landscape resistant to fires and resilient to drought.

“We’ve come a really long way on that journey from bare, degraded, peat 10 years ago, to sphagnum-rich, soaking wet, functional blanket bog,” Kate commented.

The RSPB continues to engage volunteers in similar restoration projects across the UK.
